5 welcome email formulas that actually convert

The welcome email is the only message your new subscriber is guaranteed to open. They just signed up — they're warm, curious, and expecting to hear from you. Most brands waste that moment with a one-line "thanks for subscribing" and a logo.

Here are five structures that do better.

1. The origin story

Tell them why you exist. Not the mission statement — the actual reason you started. People remember stories longer than they remember features.

2. The "what to expect"

Set the pace. Tell them how often you'll write, what you'll write about, and what they'll get out of it. It lowers the unsubscribe rate later.

3. The gift

Give them something useful in the first email — a discount, a guide, a checklist. Reciprocity is a powerful thing.

4. The tour

Show them your best work. Link to three or four greatest hits so they have something to read right now.

5. The question

Ask one question and reply to every answer. You'll learn more about your audience in a week than most brands learn in a year.

The best welcome emails combine two or three of these. The worst combine none. Pick the ones that fit your brand and write the email you wish you'd received.
